The government of Liz Truss dealt another blow after the resignation of the Minister of the Interior

Truss is fighting for her political life after just 43 days in office, and also faces a de facto confidence motion over her leadership when MPs vote on a Labor proposal to ban fracking in the House of Commons later on Wednesday (London time). Tory MPs were threatened with a whip if they voted with the opposition after the government whips said it was a “proposal of confidence” in the prime minister.

Conservative Party members Chris Skidmore, Angela Richardson and Tracy Crouch have indicated they are ready to face the consequences of challenging the government.

Braverman is a popular figure on the Conservative right, taking a strong stance against high immigration and portraying herself as an “anti-wake” fighter.

Grant Shapps, the former Secretary of Transportation, is appointed to replace Braverman. Truss offered Shapps, a prominent supporter of Rishi Sunak, in a move seen as an olive branch to her Conservative back-bench opponents, who called on her to appoint a government more representative of the broader Conservative Party.

In a letter replying to her former ministerial colleague, Truss said she accepted her resignation and “respect the decision she made”.

“It is important that the ministerial law is adhered to, and that the confidentiality of the cabinet is respected.
I am grateful for your service as Minister of the Interior,” Truss wrote.
