But there has always been more hope than actual achievement, style more than substance and a strong tendency to avoid admitting defeat.

Of all the scathing anecdotes that have been told in the past week or so, the confession of a former chancellor, Kirsty Buchanan, who worked with Truss when she was attorney general, has been the most telling.

Buchanan eventually said the consultants “ran out of excuses” and Truss had to appear on the show.

It’s not the kind of thing you’d expect from a person who should be willing to fight for what you believe in. And it must be remembered that it was the lack of selling skill, persuasion and basic action that contributed to causing financial well-being and ruining her actions.
It also set back arguments for the conservative economic side of British politics for decades. There was a perfectly respectable argument for Truss’ agenda for growth and tax cuts, but not at the moment. You will be lost forever.
Worst of all, there was something incredibly forgiving about these six weeks. And to be honest, there’s also something indulgent about the seven weeks of my driving campaign that preceded it. It happens after a decade of rule when, one by one, the best talents have been driven out, whether retired, or ostracized in a bitter and twisting battle for vanity.

Over the next week, the Conservative Party must now choose a leader who can restore the confidence of markets, businesses and, most importantly, voters. Obviously, those they choose must be able to assume the authority of the ceremony and unite the party.
Boris Johnson’s contemplation of returning shows that he has not learned his lesson. He may have once been a huge electoral asset, but he’s no longer caught up after a scandal that plagued him last year.
He has at least the advantage of being elected by the state and may be the only person who can hold his electoral coalition together.
But the flip side is that many MPs remember why he was sacked and he still faces an inquiry in the House of Commons over the party door.
It was Johnson, with Truss, who routinely denounced their opponents for “fear of the draft,” accusing them of speaking out about Britain. But what should never be forgotten is that Truss and Johnson drove the economy and smeared the nation on the international stage in the first place.
