Stockholm: The far-right party has arrested a Swedish Democratic official for making derogatory comments about teenage Jewish diarist Anne Frank.
In a now-deleted Instagram post, Rebecka Fallenkvist called Anne “immoral”, according to Swedish media.
Rebecca Wallenqvist, a Swedish Democratic official, has been suspended by the far-right party for making derogatory comments about teenage Jewish diarist Anne Frank. attributed to him:AP
Anne, who wrote memoirs while in hiding in Amsterdam prior to her capture, died at the age of 15 in Nazi Germany’s Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in February 1945.
The post by Valenqvist, 26, head of the Swedish Democrats’ television programme, drew strong reactions from Jewish groups and Israeli Ambassador Ziv Nevo Coleman, who said in a tweet: “I strongly condemn this despicable insult, and disrespect for the memory of Anne Frank.” His post included what appears to be a screenshot of Fallenkvist’s Instagram post.
The Swedish Democrats’ media director, Oscar Cavalli Björkman, told Swedish news agency TT that the party would take Valnqvist’s “insensitive and inappropriate” comments seriously and launch an internal investigation into the matter.
While it remained unclear what kind of point Fallenkvist wanted to make with her comments on Anne’s diary, she later sent a text message to a Swedish newspaper. Dagen’s Nytter Saying it may have been misinterpreted.
“The book is a poignant depiction of human good and evil,” Valnqvist said in her letter to the newspaper. “The kind Anne, who in the early chapters like any other girl lives her life in peace and finds an interest in boys (which I highlighted), contrasts with the evil of Nazism. My story was aimed at the good and the human being at once while not underestimating the evil to which she was subjected.”
The Swedish Democrats were founded in the 1980s by people who were active in far-right groups, including neo-Nazis. The party emerged as Sweden’s second largest in the September 11 elections under the leadership of Jimmy Akesson.
Three center-right Swedish parties agreed on Friday to form a coalition government with the support of the Swedish Democrats who have moved toward mainstream politics, but maintain a hard line on immigration.
