Green Party leader Adam Bandt and Senator Lydia Thorpe have joined forces to call on Labor to spend $161 million in this month’s budget on a National Truth and Justice Commission and to advance a federal treaty with Indigenous Australians.
The party wants the Truth and Justice Commission, which will have the powers of the Permanent Royal Commission to investigate and reveal historical and ongoing violations and abuses of human rights and make recommendations on how to recover from them, to receive $32 million annually for at least four people. Years.

It is also calling for a Treaty Committee that would promote and raise awareness of the need for a treaty or treaties with First Nations personnel, which the Parliamentary Budget Office estimates would cost just over $8 million annually.
The funding call comes after Australian Indigenous Minister Linda Burnie predicted a growing amount of misinformation during the debate over Indigenous voice before Parliament, warning that “our opponents will make more false claims … as we approach the referendum”.
In 2017, the Uluru Manifesto from the Heart – a written document endorsed by hundreds of indigenous leaders – called for a voice to be established before Parliament, followed by the Makarata Commission to oversee truth-telling about indigenous history and the “conclusion of agreements” or treaty.

The policy of the Greens is that the federal government seeks to pursue truth, treaty and voice simultaneously, while the Albanian government first wants the vote referendum, scheduled for 2023-24.
Despite the Greens’ support for her, Thorpe has hedged the support of The Voice, recently calling it a “waste of money”. Earlier this week, she was forced to make clear that she would not campaign for a “no” vote in the referendum.
The Greens’ vice-chairman of the Senate, Gap Wurong, Junay and Gunditjamara, said on Thursday it was time to continue the work of truth and treaty as well as voice.
