Rob McLennan /

SES volunteers spent most of the night responding to requests for help as torrential rain fell on Geelong overnight.

Flood damage and building damage were reported in areas including Geelong West, East Geelong, Highton, Breakwater and Grovedale while homeowners reported roof collapse in Highton.

Geelong recorded nearly 15 mm of rain between 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Thursday in one of the heaviest rainfall in the state.

Wyndham received the 14mm in less than three hours.

Vuebank, in north-east Melbourne, was flooded by nearly 30 mm between 10:30 pm and midnight.

Geelong is forecasting showers today with a possibility of thunderstorms in the morning and afternoon, westerly winds at 25 km/h.

The rain should start to subside tomorrow, before a mostly dry Sunday.
